Stefano Domenicali, the boss of Formula 1, who represents the Liberty Media group, holder of the commercial rights to the discipline, arrived in South Africa on Monday after attending the Azerbaijan Grand Prix the day before. The purpose of this visit is to meet representatives of the Kyalami circuit, to discuss a possible return of the South African Grand Prix to the World Championship calendar, starting next year.
24 Grand Prix in 2023?
Africa is currently the only continent where no GP is run. South Africa had hosted Grands Prix mainly from 1965 to 1985, before apartheid, which prevailed in the country, caused the suspension of the event. There had again been a South African GP in 1992 then 1993. The last edition had also been won by Alain Prost, world champion that year.
If South Africa were on the program for the next Championship, then there could be 24 races in 2023. Las Vegas will indeed host a GP, as will Qatar, which was removed from the calendar this year due to the organization of the FIFA World Cup. And Shanghai could also return, if the Covid-19 pandemic is checked. A provisional calendar for the 2023 season could be published next August.
