Animal abandonment: the shelters are already full

Like every year, the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) welcomes thousands of animals abandoned by their masters at the dawn of their departure on vacation. This year, more than the others, the shelters find themselves overwhelmed.

The summers follow one another and are sadly alike for the SPA. Like every year during this period, the Humane Society fills its boxes with thousands of dogs, cats and others.

Nevertheless, the summer of 2022 is particularly more violent. Indeed, 13,000 animals have been abandoned since the start of the season, ie 1,400 more than last year at the same time.

Involuntary refusals

This consequent increase in abandonment has even prompted shelters to refuse certain animals. “Last week, we couldn’t accommodate everyone because there wasn’t enough room,” Aurélie Ithurbide, team leader at the SPA in Orgeval (Yvelines) told CNEWS.

In an attempt to explain these abandonments, the latter pointed to the irresponsibility of many new owners, who only realize the obligations linked to an animal (cost, food, health) too late.

At the beginning of the summer, the SPA recalled that the abandonment of animals is an offense “punishable by five years’ imprisonment and a fine of 75,000 euros if the abandonment is followed by the death of the animal”.
