Elon Musk is no longer at his first attempt, after Paypal, Tesla or SpaceX, Starlink is above all a colossal project by the South African entrepreneur. It is through his space company called SpaceX that Elon Musk has set himself the goal of creating a reliable and stable internet connection everywhere in the world.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is currently testing the Starlink satellite connection from Antarctica. The NSF has announced that this contribution could allow them to work in much better conditions, in particular to share data.

In the McCurdo station, no less than 1,000 scientists can now benefit from a bandwidth of 17 Mb/s. Yes, a bandwidth that even some places in our beautiful country do not know… (force to you).

According to the United States Antarctic Program, scientists can, in addition to sharing data faster, watch series on Netflix, make video conferences, and even enjoy their families via Skype. Obviously, this adds additional security in the event that an emergency strikes the station, the latter will be able to communicate their situation more quickly.

According to Starlink, the bandwidth could reach between 50 and 200 MB/s in the coming months. The spokesperson for the National Science Foundation has not yet released any results on the research conducted at this very moment with the addition of Starlink, since the service is still in beta testing.

The official SpaceX Twitter account even retweeted the NSF by finally formalizing that the Starlink satellite internet connection was now available on all seven continents.

Starlink is available on all continents according to SpaceX, but unfortunately that’s not actually the case. If we refer to the global Starlink access map, we can see that neither Africa nor Asia has satellite coverage. The multi-billionaire company, however, announces that Starlink will be available “soon”, without further details.

Elon Musk has revealed that two African countries, Nigeria and Mozambique, as well as two Asian countries, the Philippines and Japan, will be able to take advantage of Starlink by the end of 2022. It is therefore at the end of year that we will be able to see if Elon Musk’s bet is successful.

The purpose of satellite coverage is to overcome “terrestrial” technical problems in order to offer internet everywhere, even at sea. The interactive map does not show progress in maritime coverage, but we already know that some customers such as Royal Caribbean can already take advantage of Starlink services.

By 2025, Elon Musk expects to reach 12,000 satellites deployed in Earth orbit. However, engineers working on the Starlink project have managed to get the satellites to communicate with each other more efficiently, which could totally make internet coverage even more flexible than before. Indeed, to take advantage of the connection via Starlink, you did not have to be very far from a SpaceX ground station.

If the tests in Antarctica go well, it will prove even more that SpaceX is capable of great things for the future.
