NASA Astronaut Says It Would Be ‘Horrible’ To Live In Elon Musk’s Mars Colony

It’s no news that billionaire SpaceX owner Elon Musk wants to establish a colony on Mars (when and how that will happen is another story. SpaceX itself was created for, among other purposes, fulfilling this goal. However, NASA astronaut Stanley G. Love points out that living in isolation in space is not an easy task.

If Elon Musk manages to move his project forward, one million humans should land on Mars by 2050. For the billionaire, the exodus to Mars will be inevitable, because the Earth’s resources could run out sooner than expected , since humans are destroying the planet.

In a conversation with Peter Diamandis, founder of the X Prize Foundation, Elon Musk said he truly believed that achieving his ambitious project would not be easy. He even predicts some loss of life along the way. “You may not come back alive, but it’s a glorious adventure, and it’s going to be an amazing experience,” he said.

NASA astronaut and scientist Stan Love has spent more than 300 hours off Earth and says he wouldn’t commit to a mission to Mars. He knows the experience of being stranded and away from his planet would be horrific, at least for the first people to arrive in space.

In an interview with The Sun, the astronaut said that although there was such a possibility, the experience would not be pleasant. ” This [a declaração] It’s based on an opportunity I had while I was in the astronaut office to go to Antarctica,” Love said.

Additionally, during the interview, Love details how he felt living in the camp. Although he lives in small tents and has all the food he needs, he can’t stand to stay there for long. “I think the longest stay there is five years in a row,” said the astronaut.

Recalling his return, Stan said the smell of living earth, grass and flowers “brought tears to his eyes”. That’s a good reason why someone would refuse a one-way trip to Mars, but maybe in the face of possible planetary destruction people might change their minds.
