The South Korean government’s YouTube channel was hacked on Saturday, apparently to show a cryptocurrency-related video that included Tesla CEO Elon Musk, but has been restored, sources say.
At 3:30 a.m., the official government channel on the video-sharing platform appeared to have been hacked as its name was changed to “SpaceX Invest” and aired a live cryptocurrency show that included an interview. of the American billionaire and founder of SpaceX Musk.
An official from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which manages the YouTube account, said he became aware of the situation at 6 a.m., took security measures and restored the account at 7:20 a.m.
A Google Korea official said they are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
The attack follows the hacking of a YouTube channel operated by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), which falls under the Ministry of Tourism, earlier this week.
According to KTO, the channel, which has about 509,000 subscribers, was initially targeted on Thursday and then again the next day. The channel is currently unavailable.
A KTO official said Google automatically blocks access to the account if it detects abnormal logins.
