The summer of 2022, marked by numerous waves of intense heat, did not spare the animals, which also suffered from the heat. In dairy farms, some have even installed misters and fans to relieve their animals and thus gain a few extra liters of milk.
We are not the only ones to have suffered from the heat this summer. The animals also experienced a difficult summer 2022, marked by several episodes of heat wave. Some dairy farmers have therefore taken the lead in relieving their animals in the face of soaring mercury. Especially since a cow, for example, gives its full performance when the temperature is around 10 degrees.
In the Vosges, Jean-Charles, at the head of a farm of 70 dairy cows, therefore decided to install huge fans in his barn. “From 20 degrees, the fans start up faster to stir up as much air as possible. And when it is still above 27 or 28 degrees in the building, there is a misting system that comes into operation. road. It mists in front of the fan to cool the barn”.
Limit yield losses
A technique that allows him to gain 7 to 8 degrees in the building. A more breathable atmosphere that improves milking performance: “Cows suffering from excess heat means a loss of three liters per day and per cow”, illustrates Jean-Marc , a 15% drop in productivity.
Thanks to the fans, this breeder limits this loss to only 5%. However, this installation comes at a cost. “If we had to invest only in what is profitable, we would do nothing. We do it so that our cows are well and they give it back to us”, says Jean-Marc.
Despite everything, the breeder estimates that it will take him at least ten years to amortize his installation at 20,000 euros.
